Faerie Needs You! - The Relationship Between Faeries and Mortals

Even though they live in a world all their own, the Fae are not an independent species. The Fae draw their power from the emotions of mortals.

Given that they cannot bear the touch of iron and steel, it's in the Fae's best interest to keep humans around if only to be able to use magic and glamours that keep their world running.

Different types of Fae feed off of different types of emotions. There are multiple pilgrimage sites in the Faerie realm where these emotions collect. Typically, the Fae will make their pilgrimage to their appropriate site once or twice a year to replenish their magic.

Romantic entanglements between Fae and humans are possible and have been documented throughout history. It tends to end poorly for the humans, though, especially if they allow themselves to be carried off into Faerie. Time runs differently there, so a weekend fling in Faerie could turn out to be a century-long vacation.

It is also possible for humans and faeries to have children together. The children of such a union are called Halflings (not to be confused with Tolkien's hobbits!).

These children are more beautiful than humans, and will have some ability to perform magic and create glamours. Usually, they are less powerful than the Fae, but some exceptions exist. Halflings also differ from the full-blooded Fae in that they are able to lie.
